Meghan’s Tie-Dye Fun
I visited another first grade classroom (Hi, Mrs. Noftsger!) and we did a WOWIE FUN (and very cool looking) art project. It looks like there are a lot of steps to follow, but that’s just because I like to talk a lot. (Blah, blah, blah. There. I feel better now.) It’s actually a very easy project to do.

You need:

A plain white paper towel
Markers
Scissors
A spray bottle filled with water
Four or five rubber bands (or six if you want to shoot one across the room)

  1. Stick your finger in the middle of the paper towel’s underside. Let the ends of the paper towel fall down. It will look like a closed umbrella.
  2. Grip the top knuckle of the “umbrella” covered finger with the fingers on your opposite hand.
  3. Keeping your opposite hand finger grip on the paper towel, slide your covered finger out
  4. Right at the grip spot, twist a rubber band tightly around the paper towel. (And now you can let go if your fingers are cramped!) Be VERY CAREFUL not to rip the paper towel or you have to start all over again, which isn’t much fun.
  5. Twist another rubber band around the paper towel a little bit lower than the last rubber band. DON’T RIP THE PAPER TOWEL!
  6. Repeat step number five until you’ve used all your rubber bands. Now your paper towel will look like a worm dressed up in rings instead of an umbrella.
  7. Color each segment (that’s the spot between the rubber bands) with marker. Switch colors and keep going until no more white shows.
  8. Hold your colored-paper-towel-worm over the sink. Spray the whole thing with just enough water to make the colors wet. (If you use too much water, the color turns out duller. Hey—the words “color” and “duller” rhyme! I just noticed that.)
  9. Blot the excess water off your wet worm with another paper towel
  10. When your paper towel is dry, CAREFULLY snip off the rubber bands. In fact, you might want to ask a handy adult to do it for you.

TADA! You’ve just made beautiful, colorful tie-dye art! You can frame it, cut it into a flower shape, or use it for a blanket for one of your Easter eggs. Don’t forget to take a moment and thank God for all the wonderful colors He put in our world!
