School Visits
Lori offers both face-to-face and virtual presentations. These can be a combination of large—either half a school population (example: K-2 or 3-5) or the whole school—or small—one or two classrooms at a time. All face-to-face presentations include lunch with the author, where the organizer way choose which faculty and or students attend.
Here are presentations and workshop descriptions. When you request a school visit, please indicate which topics you are interested in covering.
Large Group Presentations (Appropriate for all grades K-5)
From Idea to Book
Lori talks about the writing process and the many steps an author must go through before a book is published. She addresses one of the most important writing skills—using your five senses to show and not tell information. This tip culminates with a challenge for students to match a short description clue to a place or event.
Sticky, Gooey, Chompy, Chewy, Yummy-tummy, Tutti-fruity Bubblegum
Encouraging audience participation, Lori presents a short, unpublished story about a young girl who bites off a little bit more than she can chew. She encourages students to tap into their own life experiences to craft a clever tale.
I’m an Author! You’re an Author!
Lori describes the mindset of an author and how she came to be one. Through visual exercises, she encourages students to recognize their own ability to write. She ends the session looking at a series of wordless pictures and generating a story to accompany it.
Small Group Presentations: Grades K-2 Workshops (30 minutes with one or two classrooms at a time)
Create a Character
Students give suggestions and Lori draws the character. Then, using ideas from the audience, she creates a story for our new hero.
How to Be Bored
Students will explore “empty spaces” and learn how to fill those moments with wild imagination.
Small Group Presentations: All Grades
Using Both Sides of Your Brain
After explaining how our brain sorts through ideas and which hemisphere is responsible for what, Lori leads students in brainy exercises and then shows them how to draw with both hands at the same time. If time allows, she will model how to create a story using both sides of our brain.
Small Group Presentations: Grade 3-5 Workshops (45-minutes with one or two classrooms at a time)
Cultivating Creativity
In this interactive workshop, Lori shows students how word games and thinking exercises can help them generate their own original ideas.
Ah-ha’s for Adding Ha-ha’s to Your Story
Humor can make stories more interesting to read. In this workshop, I lead students through a series of short exercises that will tickle their funny bones.
